Major Encounter Areas –
The forest west of riverside is large, covering an area roughly 25 by 30 miles. Rich with multiple varieties of hardwoods, the forest is nevertheless not harvested by the Yrken that live near it. Strange things appear to happen there, and the boldest lumberjack puts his ax away when traveling near it.
1) The treant Goldenchain – A “female” who defends this forest vigorously…any who would disrespect nature’s gifts in her domain will feel her wrath. With her forest surrounded by Ken, she has little latitude for a more passive stance. The only others she really trusts are…
2) The Dragon and friends –An ancient faerie dragon and several pixies inhabit the deeper reaches of the forest. Fascinated with Goldenchain and respectful of this great old stand of trees, they do what they can to reinforce the “haunted” nature of the forest, but are not overtly aggressive like Goldenchain. (Book of Lairs, pg. 42)
a. Needs pixies developed. – Done 7/29
3) The Top of the Food Chain – A very old wyvern lives in an abandoned watchtower in the edge of the forest, and is the other half of the horrible stories of the haunted forest. The poor lizard is so old that most of it’s teeth are bad, but its sting is still sharp, and it lives fairly well off of the odd stray cow or sheep that wanders too close. Problem is, it can only eat the soft parts any more, and the gutted, but not devoured carcasses that it leaves, the flesh blackened by venom, have been the source of more than enough tales to keep herders and settlers far away. (Book of Lairs II, pg. 38). The wyvern is old and tired but will still fight to protect its lair, using flight and sting more than it’s weakened chompers…
4) The Brownies – The partners in crime of the faerie dragon and the pixies, the brownies are currently taking a well earned rest in an old hunting lodge at the edge of the forest. Enthralled in their card game, they will not be happy at an interruption, and will do their mischievous best to show their gratitude. (Book of Lairs II, pg. 19)
a. Possible extra angle – one player is Jarri, with a Deck of Many Things wrapped in silver cord with a silver cricket lock? “When you wish upon a star?” is the only way to open it? Think carefully…we’re not really short of threads right now.
Limited to natural creatures, not very dangerous. It’s a happy forest…
Summary – The forest should be a bit comedic, with an extra dose of melodramatic mythicism…there are reasons the surrounding villagers steer clear of it, but no one suspects the truth. How far the party penetrates should be guided by how deep in the forest the Entwhistle staff needs to be to sprout roots…and hints should be given that the forest is very interesting. We’ll see!
NOTE: The “staff” is indeed Entwhistle’s staff…play it for all it is worth…

Goldenchain is a very old treant, some 500 years. Living so close to the Troos, her forest has always been under some threat or another from the Ken, and she has grown…dare I say it…thick bark, literally and figuratively to combat the threat.
Like all treants, she is vulnerable to fire…fire-based attacks are +4 to hit, +1 on damage, and she saves at –4 vs fire attacks.
If required, she can animate up to 11 trees, one per round, with a second round for the tree to uproot itself. All animated trees are AC2, HD12, HP 72, ATT 1, DMG 4-24.

The pixies are here, with the brownies, to enjoy the company of Goldenchain and their friend the faerie dragon, Nightshade. They will use their talents to tease the party mercilessly, and will only attack if either Goldenchain or Nightshade are attacked. If the Brownies are attacked, they will assume they deserved it.
